DEVELOPING A CUSTOM WORDPRESS SITE FOR A STARTUP
BUSINESS/ORGANIZATION

Development objectives

In this project you will build a dynamic website for your dream startup business/organization. You will design and
develop a custom WordPress website from ground up leveraging an open-sourced CMS as a backend platform and a
standards-based front-end interface development framework (child-theme). The site will represent the public digital
face of your startup and will feature real content (no place-holder content, e.g. “lorem ipsum”, or “coming soon”). You
should write your own content and produce your own digital media. The design of the user experience and
interactions will be appropriate for the content and adhere to standards of usability. The site will be fully functional,
responsive and accessible and hosted on the provided hosting platform, desktop and mobile usable and responsive
on all consumer-grade common screen resolutions. It must be launched on DragonTeach.

All your learnings to-date on web-design and development, as well as conceptual processes including strategic
design thinking, research, design development, marketing and communications, graphic design and media production
will culminate in this project and you will draw from all your experiences to develop your planned and designed
startup, and the respective online presence. The emphasis of this project is on web development.

Scope of work

WordPress: The website must use the WordPress framework for the backend and management of all content, media
and digital assets, except for static design that is driven by the WP template (e.g. visual identity of the brand, grids,
colour schemes). The theme must be a substantially personalized child-theme of a standards-based framework and
base theme, as instructed in class (Twenty Twenty-One). No other themes are accepted. The website must include
one homepage, one blog section, three inner pages, and at least 3 blog entries.

Homepage: The homepage must include working navigation across all the inner pages and feature a mash- up of
highlight content from ALL the inner pages as well as the blog. The featured highlights should be presented with well-
designed components in a visual and engaging way. Consult the “W3Schools How-to” for ideas:

Blog: Your website must include a Blog section, leveraging the WP “Post” content type for time-based content such
as blog posts, news or events. You should have at least 3 blog entries in your blog section.
Inner page-typologies: Three inner pages should each have a unique look and the design of these inner pages
must be suitable for their respective content. For example, the “About” page will have to look differently from the

“Gallery” page for a startup business that is an “Alternative Art Gallery”, or a “Product Item” page will look differently
than the “Store History” page for a shopping site, both from a design and from a content development perspective.

While the homepage is a unique aggregate mash-up of content from inner pages, the inner pages themselves may
be chosen from the following suggested page-typologies provided each type is used only once:

1. Content-heavy page with a balanced mix of copy and imagery (e.g. Mission, About, Our Story, etc.)
2. Photo-rich page (e.g. Gallery, Discography)
3. Video page (e.g. demo reels, sizzlers, event videos)
4. Form page (e.g. Contact/Feedback, Shopping/Ordering, etc.)
5. List of artifacts (e.g. Products, Shopping Cart)
6. Person profile page for (e.g. Directory, Biography)
7. Mash-up (e.g. Features from different sources)
