Innovative Solution is a small-sized software company, which develops software products for several financial organisations, e.g., asset finance company, investment company, loan and mortgage companies, etc. Their office is located at the top floor of a twelve-storey commercial building behind large plate-glass windows so that the staff can have a lovely view from the roof-top and enjoy their break in the deck. The office is equipped with smoke detectors and automatic water sprinklers. The whole commercial building is equipped with air-conditioning. The electrical power to the office (including all the devices inside) comes from the commercial building. Furthermore, all the devices inside the office are directly connected to the power source of the building without any regulatory devices in between. An entrance door equipped with a keypad combination lock prevents unauthorized physical access to the office.

The company currently has fifteen employees who work five days a week. The company provides a flexible working arrangement and hence the employees can work from their home on any day of the week. However, they must come to the office for at least four days a week. The seating arrangement is also flexible, and the employees can move around with their laptops as the office is equipped with a high- speed Wi-Fi connection. The company also uses cloud services for storage and backup solutions. The employees upload their days’ work in the cloud server before finishing their shift for the day. The company is trying to grow its business and hence maintains a strong presence in social media. Their social media web page publishes promotional offers, recruitment advertisements, and pictures of recent achievements, e.g., signed contracts with a new client, staff training and celebration parties. Overall, the company is doing very well and growing fast.

Task list:

  1. Identify seven possible and most relevant threats (after considering the business environment and the nature of the firm) that could occur in Innovative solution. Explain the reasons for their occurrence with appropriate references.
  2. For each threat identified in (a) above, recommend a suitable control(s) to deal with it and briefly explain how the control will help to protect against this threat. Use appropriate references to backup your recommendations.
